Common Questions

🏥 Health & Drugs

Does my provincial plan cover everything?

No. Provincial plans (like OHIP, MSP, AHCIP) generally do not cover prescription drugs, ambulance services, dental work, or vision care for adults between 25 and 64. These costs must be paid out-of-pocket unless you have private insurance.

Are these premiums tax deductible?

Yes! If you are self-employed or an unincorporated business owner, private health insurance premiums are often 100% tax-deductible as a business expense. For employees, they can count towards the Medical Expense Tax Credit.

What is “Guaranteed Issue”?

This means the insurance company cannot deny you coverage due to your medical history. This is typically available (e.g., Manulife FollowMe™) if you apply within 60-90 days of losing your previous employer’s group benefits.

Does it cover Massage & Chiropractor?

Yes. Most “Extended Health” plans include a combined annual maximum (e.g., $500 per year) for registered paramedical practitioners, including Massage Therapists (RMT), Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, and Podiatrists.

What if I am a new immigrant?

If you are waiting for your provincial health card (the 3-month waiting period), you should purchase Visitors to Canada insurance first. Once you have your provincial card, you can switch to these Extended Health & Dental plans.

🦷 Dental Coverage

Is there a waiting period for dental?

Yes. Most insurers enforce a waiting period (usually 3 months) before you can claim reimbursement for routine dental work. For major restorative work, the wait can be 1 year. We recommend applying before you have a dental emergency.

How much coverage do I get?

Plans usually start with a “Year 1” maximum (e.g., $500 to $750). If you keep the plan, this limit increases in Year 2 and Year 3 (often up to $1,000+), rewarding you for loyalty.

What is the difference between Basic vs. Major?

Basic Services include cleaning (scaling), polishing, exams, x-rays, and simple fillings. Major Services include crowns, bridges, dentures, and complex oral surgery. Basic is covered by most plans; Major requires a comprehensive plan.

Does it cover Orthodontics (Braces)?

Generally, no. Individual health plans rarely cover braces for adults. Some premium plans may offer coverage for children, but usually only after a 2-3 year waiting period.

Can I keep my plan if I change jobs?

Yes. Unlike a work benefit plan which you lose when you quit, these are personal plans. You own the policy, meaning your coverage stays with you regardless of your employment status.
